Sarlat is a medieval city in the Dordogne, SW France which is often host to film crews who value it's "fairytale" architecture.

The lanterne des morts at Sarlat is among several to be found in the Dordogne region of SW France including those at Coussac Bonneval and Atur. It is said that it was once the custom to set a lamp in the lanterne each night to guide the souls of those who had departed this life. A smaller lanterne des morts stands beside the black madonna church of Notre Dame des Miracles at Mauriac in the Auvergne.

The town's symbol is a dragon or salamander, from which it is said that the town derives it's name.
