Plymouth Mummers

The Plymouth Mummers mark the turning year, performing the local variant of the traditional "mystery" plays at Christmas at plympton St Maurice Guildhall near Plymouth in south Devon.

Mummers plays are ancient folk plays are performed seasonally in all parts of England, followed by the collection of alms. Mummers are known to have performed at the court of Henry IV.

The actors are usually all male, and generally known as "Mummers" or "Guisers" (since disguise is an essential element of the ritual).

The characters and narrative vary enormously, but death and rebirth are essential elements, with "Good" overcoming "evil", with lots of audience interaction. The story of St George and the Dragon is perhaps the most common theme, with characters including St George, the Dragon, the Doctor, the Fool and Slasher - the Turkish Knight. The death and resurrection of the dragon is enacted through the intervention of St George and the comic Doctor.
