Périgueux in the Dordogne, SW France, is a major staging point for pilgrims following the ancient Chemin St Jacques / Way of St James to Santiago de Compostella in northern Spain.

The via Lemovicensis Chemin St Jacques / Way of St James is sign marked with bronze coquilles St Jacques

Legend tells us that the cathedral was built over the tomb of St Front during the 6th century AD. The six cupolas and 12th century bell tower combine roman and byzantine styles of architecture.

The cloister is all that remains of the former convent. In the 12th/13th/14th century roman gothic vaulted galeries are ancient sarcophagi, while the "pineapple" which once crowned the cathedral bell tower now sits in the present garden.

La légende situe l'emplacement de la cathédrale sur le tombeau de saint Front, bâtie dès le 6ème siècle. Ses cinq coupoles sur pendentifs de 27 m de diamètre et 13 m de hauteur et son clocher du 12ème siècle à trois étages mêlant les arts roman et byzantin.

Le cloître voisin est un vestige de l'ancien couvent. Ses galeries voûtées d'ogives des 12ème, 13ème et 14ème siècles, réalisées dans les styles romans et gothiques, exposent des sarcophages. Dans le jardin, trône la "pomme de pin" qui coiffait autrefois le clôcher de la cathédrale.
