Legend tells us that the cathedral was built over the tomb of St Front during the 6th century AD. The six cupolas and 12th century bell tower combine roman and byzantine styles of architecture. The cloister is all that remains of the former convent. In the 12th/13th/14th century roman gothic vaulted galeries are ancient sarcophagi, while the "pineapple" which
once crowned the cathedral bell tower now sits in the present garden.
