Fire is an essential element of the midwinter solstice festival. Ockington Morris venture forth at night to celebrate the sun's rebirth at the Edgcumbe Arms at Cremyl, near Plymouth, England.

Ockington welcome the turn of the year with a mummers play with spine-chilling costumes, followed by vigorous dances - brandishing blazing fire brands and iron clubs.

Mummers mark the turning year, performing the local variant of the traditional "mystery" plays at Easter and Christmas.
The characters include St George, the Dragon, the Doctor, the Fool, the Turkish Knight and Beelzebub.
