Meymac
The black madonna at Meymac in the Correze, SW France, is perhaps one of the most striking of black madonna statues, and wears a turban. It is curious that the statue of St Roch in the same church depicts St Roch accompanied by a black figure of a woman rather than by the usual dog. Fantastic beasts are carved on the capitals and on the stone font. In The Cult of the Black Virgin Ean Begg describes the black madonna / vierge noire of Meymac as having been originally part of the treasure of the 11th century benedictine priory of St Andrew of the merovingian period.
