At Massiac in the Auvergne, France the tiny Chapelle Sainte Madelaine de Chalet is perched high on a promontory overlooking the town, above a sacred cave thought to have been used for solar rites. Beside the pilgrim way which leads to the chapel is a stone pillar carved with a figure of the saint or deity.

On the opposite bank of the river Alagnon once stood a chapel dedicated to St Victor, the would-be lover of Ste Madeleine. The two lovers were parted by the giant Gargantua.

The legend of St Victor and Ste Madeleine is told in full in the Guide de l'Auvergne mystérieuse.
