Situated at 850 - 1150m altitude, La Bouboule is set in the heart of the Massif du Sancy and the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, close to Mont Dore.

La Bourboule derives it's name from Borvis, the Deity of the hot springs which abound in the Auvergne and venerated by the Arvernes people since Time Immemorial.

The Auvergne is the ancient province which corresponds to several modern "departments", with many mountains of volcanic origin - such as the Puy de Dome, Mont-Dore, and Plomb du Cantal. The numerous medicinal springs serve the many thermal spas such as La Bourboule and Mont-Dore etc.

The waters at La Bourboule are arsenical, and prescribed for skin and respiratory problems in addition to childrens development problems.
