The tumuli de Bougon are thought to have been constructed 2000 years before the Egyptian pyramids - ie between the 5th & 6th centuries bc.

These five tumuli and the further long low earthwork which divides the site into two parts are considered to be architectural masterpieces of the period.

The oldest structures are circular in shape, built entirely in dry stone technique with corbelled vaults. The later structures are rectangular in shape. The stones used are believed to weigh around 80 - 90 tonnes.
