Pilgrimage to Watergate

Watergate Cave

It is difficult to imagine a place so far from civilisation... yet only a mile away from the hustle and bustle of the seaside town of Newquay, Cornwall. But come with me now, while the tide is at its lowest, just a few steps from the beach at Watergate Bay, and I will show you...

We will cross the tourist road to take the beach path to the right of the estuary, towards the headland. Before reaching the far cliffs we will pass through the narrow break in the rocks. We will clamber over the rock pools and narrow gulleys.

Passing a tall outcrop of rock we suddenly find ourselves at the entrance to a massive cavern. In the rocks within we find many crystals, sparkling in the narrow shafts of light that find their way between the cracks in the rock face. In places the roof of the cavern is too high to be seen and in others one may barely walk upright.

Soon we reach the small lake, almost shallow enough to wade through in places, with a narrow ledge along one side. Myriad sea creatures swim live here and seaweeds of many colours may be seen in the half-light.

If we stay still and quiet we will find that there is no sound to be heard other than the gentle water which drips into the lake from far above beyond our sight. Not even the sound of the sea or the call of the gulls can penetrate the silence and calm that is here in this special place.

However, tide and time wait for no man so we must reluctantly return to civiliation before the cavern becomes inundated by the relentless sea... Neptune's domain once more. But for thse few minutes that we are here we may to be at one with Sea and Earth... perhaps to feel their stories and to hear their song - in harmony as always.

Watergate Bay is between Padstow and Newquay on the north coast of Cornwall opening into the Atlantic ocean.

The cave stands below the stupendous blow hole which shoots spume far into the air above. An enchanted landscape and place of primordial power.
