Notre Dame des Vertus at Sanilhac, between Périgueux and Vergt in the Dordogne, SW France was found by a shepherd whose sheep insisted on always returning to eat at a patch of poor grass. The shepherd, intrigued, excavated the area and found a statue of the madonna which he carried to the church in Périgueux. However, despite being locked in the church, the madonna returned miraculously to the spot where she was found. Thus her oratory was constructed at Sanilhac at the place where she originated.

Notre dame de Sanilhac is thought to be a possible black madonna site.
