Saint Michael and the Solar Deity

With a light heart and a firm tread the Pilgrim passes along the Way - savouring the scented air and the song of the breeze.

In his superbly inspiring book
The Art of Pilgrimage Phil Cousineau reminds us of the potential for experiencing the sacred on our travels.

For if we are conscious of atmosphere we may make every journey soulful - no matter what our destination.

St Michael the archangel of Light, leads the heavenly hosts - reigning over high places, with many hilltop shrines dedicated to him.

The celebrated St Michael ley follows the Beltain / May day sunrise alignment from the far south western tip of England to the east coast, visiting many megalithic sites as well as chapels and hills dedicated to St Michael - the saint of high places - with it's companion "Mary" ley visiting related water sites and holy wells en route.

Such "dragon" - or "earth" energies were known to ancient Chinese feng shui geomancers as 'lung mei'... Dragon's breath.

"Killing the dragon is a feat attributed to many gods, saints and heroes, and it occurs as a symbol in the language of alchemy, from which the christian symbol of St Michael and the dragon was developed. In such a context it signifies the purification of theearth spirit, and the removal of its serpent venom by means of a pole or pillar planted in the ground and serving as an instrument of cosmic and terrestrial forces." The Earth Spirit, John Michell

The St Michael ley alignment gained recognition after John Michel referred to it in his seminal work The View over Atlantis, followed up by Hamish Miller's comprehensive dowsing of the alignment as described in detail in The Sun and the Serpent - the wonderfully evocative text of Paul Broadhurst bringing the alighnment alive in the mind's eye.
