The Green Man

Signs are all around us, and at times of pilgrimage they can be especially potent and meaningful for us on a personal level.

The Green Man represents irrepressible Life, and is associated with many customs and traditions. He is also known as the Jack-in-the-Green, the Green Knight, the May King and Wild Man of the Woods. Some equate him with Cerneunnos and herne the Hunter.

He is frequently to be found in the stonework of churches and cathedrals throughout Europe, while in London there are around thirty pubs which bear his name

In folk traditions he appears in many places such as the following:
At Yule and Twelfth Night he appears as Mister Holly
Hastings:Jack-in-the-Green
Brie, France: May day,Father May
Basle: In January the Wilde Mann sails down the Rhine on a raft and leads a dance through the streets, in company with a Lion and a Gryffon
Rutten, Belgium: St Evermair May Festivities, clothed in ivy

Adrian Calabrese, in Sacred Signs encourages us to "Hear, See and Believe" the messages which we receive from the Universe.
